When the Rain Starts Coming In | SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties

Rain can be a calming treat that leaves the earth feeling refreshed, or it can pound down and leave behind puddles and drips in all the wrong places.
Of course, some rain is needed and incredibly welcome, especially in the heat of the summer. But when rain comes in hard and fast, often bringing strong winds with it, we can end up with a mess inside our homes.
At SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau & Scott Counties, we are here to keep you safe and dry through any kind of severe weather. With 24⁄7 availability, we are ready to dry out your home any time the rain starts coming in.
In the Cape, we know that the weather can turn pretty severe fast. Tornadoes are a common concern every spring and summer, and thunderstorms are possible year-round. Our neighborhoods are also susceptible to flooding with the Mississippi River so nearby.
When heavy rains begin, we know that the river could rise and flash flooding could happen just about anywhere. Intense rains have left roadways underwater and the ground so saturated that trees are at risk when strong winds blow through. In July 2023, we saw heavy rain storms blow through that left 1000’s without power.
With the threat of storms a constant part of our lives, we know that preparation is the best way to mitigate damage. That means keeping a close eye on the news stations any time a threat is lingering and getting to higher ground when the river starts to rise.
When your home and your family are ready for storms, you can rest a little easier at night knowing that you can take quick action if something does happen. Make sure you always have two ways to receive weather alerts and that everyone in your family knows where the safe space in your home is. If a tornado is headed our way, you want to get to the lowest part of your home, but if flooding is predicted, you will need to move to a higher location.
Keep important papers stored in a safe space away from the ground, and consider moving any outside furniture in when heavy rains are predicted to wash through the area. Park your car in a safe location, and make sure you have gas in case an evacuation is ordered.
When severe flooding is predicted, move any items you don’t want to get wet to higher floors and consider turning the power off to your basement or lower levels if you are able. If you are unable to leave your home during a flood, shelter in a safe space and stay out of flood water. Call us as soon as it is safe to do so and we will head to your property to remove standing water and start drying your home right away.
Even when you are well prepared, a storm can bring floodwaters or other damages so fast there simply isn’t anything you can do. If your home does endure flooding, working with SERVPRO® is the best way to get things put back together quickly.
We will work with your insurance agent to ensure your claim is handled properly, and once the work is done, we can even help you make some decisions about how to prevent another disaster.
If the grading on the exterior of your home was washed out during the flood, it might be ideal to bring in a professional to work on your landscaping. They can increase slopes and organic materials that will help keep water moving away from your home in even the heaviest rains.
For your basement, consider investing in a sump pump if you do not already have one, or if yours just couldn’t keep up during the last event. Sump pumps work to get water out in order to prevent your basement from flooding and stop damages to your foundation.
Keep SERVPRO on your emergency contact list, too. With industry-leading equipment and local, highly trained professionals, we make it our goal to dry your home and as many of your possessions as possible as fast as possible. We are your neighbors, and we want to ensure your home is put back together without further damage quickly.
We are here for all of your water disasters. Contact us day or night for a quick recovery.
