You may not realize that odor removal is another professional service that we are available to handle the moment you need it.

When it comes to handling damages after a disaster, the road to recovery may become long, tedious and full of stress. The way your home smells once all is said and done might be the last thing on your mind.

Unfortunately, with every kind of a disaster, there is usually an odor issue that comes along with it. Even a home that looks sparkling clean and bright and new could have hidden smells that will only persist if remediation isn’t handled promptly.

If you spend most of your days wondering where that smell is coming from, it might be time to call in the pros and kick odors out of your house permanently.

Odor Removal Techniques

Odors are caused by airborne chemicals, gasses and other tiny particles. The source of the odor will need to be removed, and then a mixture of deodorization techniques and various products can be employed in a scientific fashion to wipe the smell out completely.

Some of the products that are commonly employed in odor removal include:

Masking agents. Masking agents do not remove odor; instead, they cover the smell in order to allow our professionals to work in a more pleasant atmosphere as they execute their plan to eliminate the odor altogether.

Filtration agents. Highly absorptive compounds are often employed on soft surfaces like furniture and building material to such the smell out. They also trap and filter odors in the air.

Disinfectants and sanitizers. These products kill odors at the source by eliminating bacteria and fungi that are responsible for releasing the smelly air particles.

These are not the only techniques or products that will be used in the process of remediating odors, but they are commonly used in the restoration process.

The Signature 4-Step Process

The process SERVPRO uses for removing odors has four main parts:

1. Remove the source. Odors cannot be eliminated until the source has been identified and removed. Our experts will first seek out the source in order to stop the spread of the smell.

2. Clean residue from surfaces. Once the source of the smell is removed, anything affected will need to be thoroughly cleaned and deodorized in order to stop the unpleasant smells.

3. Recreate what caused the odor. When we are ready to deodorize, we will deploy it in a similar manner as it was originally caused in order to penetrate all the same surfaces. This means that if the odor is a result of smoke damage, we will use “deodorizing smoke” to eliminate it.

4. Seal exposed surfaces. When a space has had a significant event, sealant may be necessary to block odors rather than remove them. This step is used when odor removal becomes too costly or is not practical to complete.

Effective odor removal will always require fast action. If your home or business faces an emergency situation that leaves behind nasty smells, we can respond quickly to mitigate extensive and deep damages. SERVPRO of Cape Girardeau and Scott Counties is locally owned and operated, which means we are just around the corner when you need us.
